Offer free, quality, supplementary education to under-achieving children from less-privileged sections of society so that they become high-performing, confident students with a bright future. We will do this with a culture of excellence, transparency and accountability. This will be accomplished by developing and deploying learning methods that are relevant to the environment of the children, by nurturing a team of women from every village where we are present and empowering them to transform the lives of the children in their care, and by including their parents in the transformation process.

Issue

The main issue is the time limit. As a supporting NGO, given time for taking classes is limited. We need to ensure that we cover the important concepts and reach the underachieving child.

Action

Vidyarambam trains women from the local community to teach the children in the methodology developed by the expert committee of academic consultants. These teachers in turn teach the children which makes learning enjoyable with understanding.

Demographies Served

Impact

Certainly, Vidyarambam's teaching methodology brings a change in the understanding of the concepts. The child becomes more confident and that makes him/her continue their education. The community is also addressed with the importance of education by Vidyarambam and hence they send their wards to the School. We also request the respective class teachers to be in the class while Vidyarambam Tutors teach to enable them to carry forward the teaching techniques.

Programs

  • Easy Learning English (ELE)

    Goal:

    - Make the process of learning English as a second language more enjoyable

    - Ability to read and write in English and achieve a certain amount of fluency in conversing in English

    - Negate the fear of learning English which directly reflects in the drop-out rates in schools

The ELE program has been designed in such a way that the goals mentioned above could be achieved within a specified time frame. The objective of achieving the short-term and long-term goals during the program has been planned systematically by drafting specific steps that get monitored at the end of every week.
The teachers get ample support from the ELE trainers who help them to achieve the weekly objectives by clearing their doubts and guiding them at every step.

  • Vt Learning Centers

In their early childhood, Vidyarambam children learn through sensory-motor activities and work with various specially designed materials that develop their cognitive powers.
Under the guidance of academic experts, Vidyarambam has designed educational kits for various age groups starting from kids to seniors. As and when concepts are introduced in the classroom according to the Samacheer Syllabus, Vidyarambam teachers impart the same concepts to children by using the corresponding material from the educational kit. This hands-on method of learning makes learning easier, practical, and enjoyable. 'Do and Understand' is the motive behind using relevant materials to learn and not just stop with the 'Talk and Chalk' method that is extensively adopted in most of schools.

  • Rotary Vidyarambam Nursery & Primary School

MODEL FULL-TIME ENGLISH MEDIUM SCHOOL- This School was started in 2008 for tsunami-affected children. Most of the children here are first-generation learners and from the fishing community.
The curriculum is designed in such a way that the three dimensions of learning - Academics, Extracurricular activities, and Sports are given importance which results in a well-balanced program for children. Academics are taught to children in a more practical and joyful environment using indigenous Vidyarambam kits and also through audio-visual presentations.
The school focuses on the Holistic development of the children wherein the children are encouraged to be involved in diverse activities that include Gardening, playing long-established in-door games like Pallangkuzhi (பல்லாங்குழி), Pambaram(பம்பரம்), Chess, Carrom, drawing traditional art-forms like Rangoli (கோலம்), creating numerous Arts and Crafts, maintaining the School campus and also taking turns to conduct the School Assembly every day. Their Physical and Mental discipline is instilled by practicing Yogasana every day and the school also has a well-stocked Library that inculcates the Reading habit in children in augmenting their knowledge.
As said by Hodding Carter, there are two things we should give our children, one is ‘roots’ and the other is ‘Wings’. Going by the saying, Vidyarambam aims to endow students with Knowledge, Creativity, Innovation, Discipline, and a Sense of Responsibility.

Theory of Change

To inculcate the desire in children to learn the concepts well

Milestones & Track Record

Implementation plan
At the beginning of every term, the academic consultants would train the coordinators and design the lesson plan with input from all the Coordinators. These Coordinators, in turn, go to their respective districts and train the assessors and the teachers. In the districts, in addition to first-level training for each term, refresher training for the teachers would take place after six weeks. This would enable the Coordinators to get feedback. We have Coordinators, Assistant Coordinators and Assessors. Assessors visit the centers once in a week to see whether the children have understood the concepts and teachers are in line with the lesson plan. Coordinators visit the same school once a month to further clarify that both children and the teachers are in line with Vidyarambam methodology and students have understood the concepts.
1. Academic enhancement training programs at the beginning of every term to Coordinators and Assessors.
2. The training program is conducted using various tools.
3. Minutes of the above documented after the training.
4. Coordinators to put forward their training to teachers.
5. Question papers for the diagnostic test.
6. Material checklist format to be drawn.
7. Assessor report format to be drawn.
8. Report card format for the Diagnostic test
9. Monthly review report format to be drawn
10. Follow up training to teachers at the end of 2 months.

Milestone
1. A strong foundation in fundamentals to be given to children by integrating samacheer lessons with Vidyarambam’s educational materials.
2. All primary children in target schools should be able to read / write and do basic arithmetic appropriate to the level of their age. Diagnostic test results. (Suttru form)
3. Material checklist to cross check the effective use of Vidyarambam material
4. Assessor report showing the implementation of activities by the teacher.
5. Monthly review report to show the progress
6. Material checklist to cross check the effective use of Vidyarambam material
