Korou Education Foundation took shape to help children living in the remote hills of Manipur to be competent in English. It started its efforts th Read morerough the “Library for all” initiative. The organisation observed that the students of schools in the hilly areas of Manipur were not interested in reading due to no books being available. It tacked this problem by helping set up libraries in the schools and donating sets of children books. It provides know-how and hand holds the schools to set up libraries providing manuals and on site help to manage such a set up. It also encourages the school teachers to engage the children in “Read aloud” sessions where stories are read out to children. It has prepared instruction manuals for Government school teachers to help them in delivering the foundation courses in English. This ensures point to point delivery of the lessons in the appropriate way possible. During the pandemic schools were closed due to lockdowns and children could neither attend schools or access libraries. The organisation came out with Self Learning Booklets with guidance and learning material. The booklet contains colourful images and visuals to keep the children engaged and continue learning even while staying at home. A physical booklet was the only solution since the hilly regions did not have internet connectivity to aid online lessons. To aid children at their homes to learn It organises village reading coaches wherein youth of the villages are trained professionally to impart education, basic data entry skills. These youths go around the village visiting homes and hand holding the children in their education journey. It has managed to set up libraries in 15 schools in Manipur having more than 5000 books. Children’s learning outcome has increased by 152%. More than 75,000 self learning booklets have been distributed and more than 3700 children have benefitted by the village reading coaches.
