Effect of Oil Palm Cultivation on Biodiversity
Conservation India (CI), is deeply concerned about the potential impact of the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) on India's biodiversity-rich forests, particularly in the North-Eastern states and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. It fears that the extensive oil palm plantations planned under the NMEO-OP could lead to the permanent destruction of critical ecosystems that have evolved over centuries. In response to this looming calamity, Dr Umesh Srinivasan, Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Science, has drafted a letter to the Prime Minister, urging for a more cautious approach to achieving edible oil self-sufficiency without compromising the country's last intact forests. CI believes that India has an opportunity to demonstrate a thoughtful and enlightened way of expanding oil palm cultivation, one that minimizes the loss of natural habitats and sets an example for other developing nations.
