In 2005, Neelam Jolly, the founder of VISHWAS started working in Sanp ki Nagli, a small village in Sohna block of Gurugram district of Haryana with a vision of an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are ensured equal rights and opportunities in a dignified manner. Now, after fifteen years of persistent work and resilience, VISHWAS is a proud team of 45 people working for the four programmes that complement each other. So far VISHWAS has reached out to 3750 beneficiaries


Issue

All our programmes cater to children and young adults from the most marginalised communities. Even within vulnerable groups, those with disabilities are most likely to get excluded and discriminated against. Every child has a right to meaningful and quality education in a positive learning environment. Livelihood options and life skills are essential for everyone, not only because they enable independence, but also because they help to improve self-esteem and lead to a life of dignity and respect. All adults have a right to take control of their lives and exercise choices to select their personal preferences and livelihood. There is a need to create enabling environment by community sensitisation and awareness raising programmes, facilitating PwDs to avail their rights and entitlements, empowering them to participate in decision making and sensitizing relevant stakeholders in the community to accept diversity and promote inclusive practices.


Action

VISHWAS is committed to working towards promoting accessible, enabling and inclusive environments. We develop and promote inclusive models in education, skill development and community outreach in partnership with the government, institutions, communities, corporate sector, parents and children. Beginning in 2005, and currently operating from Gurugram, Haryana, our activities are focused around four core programmes: 1.VISHWAS VIDYALAYA 2.VISHWAS SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING 3.VISHWAS COMMUNITY BASED PROGRAMME 4.VISHWAS RESEARCH AND TRAINING

Impact

Our journey began in 2005. A total of 3750 beneficiaries have been impacted through our various programmes. So far 1032 children have completed elementary education through VISHWAS Vidyalaya. 2235 PwDs have been a part of Sohna (Rural) as well as urban Gurugram Community based programme. They have received awareness about entitlements, linked to resources and their Disability certificate and UDID have been facilitated. 408 PwDs have received various services from the Disability Resource Centre. 75 PwDs have received training in Life skills /Vocational skills.

    The programme for young adults and adults with disabilities includes both skill development for employment opportunities and life skills training for independent living. We collaborate with corporates and potential employers to encourage employment of PwDs.

    Under this programme we are also running a resource centre for children and adults with disabilities.

  • Vishwas Vidyalaya

    VISHWAS Vidyalaya is a recognized inclusive elementary school with nearly 300 students, studying from Nursery to VIII. Most of our students are first generation learners, coming from migrant communities marginalised by poverty and with little or no prior exposure to formal education. About 18% of the students are with disabilities. The Vidyalaya aims for holistic and all round development of its students through a well balanced curriculum and by identifying and addressing barriers that prevent active learning and participation. There is exposure to digital learning and educational trips are organised to make learning more meaningful. Every effort is made by the school staff to provide a stimulating environment that includes a range of co-curricular activities such as sports, music, dance, arts and crafts.
