Acid attacks inflict profound and long-lasting consequences on the victims, making it imperative for humanitarians across the country to take action. Read moreAs a result, several institutions and programs have emerged to assist these women in regaining control of their lives. However, it is essential to question whether the current efforts are sufficient. While the focus is on aiding women after an attack, a more comprehensive approach is needed. This approach should address the underlying issue by promoting mindset changes, advocating for stricter laws, and ensuring effective rehabilitation for survivors. To meet this critical need, Meer was established. The organization aims to unite people, harness their energies, and work towards creating a safer world for women. By tackling the root causes and advocating for lasting change, Meer strives to empower acid attack survivors and prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place. Their holistic approach encompasses not only providing support but also creating a society that values and safeguards the rights and well-being of all women. According to the Acid Survivors Foundation India, the motives behind acid attacks range from something as simple as a girl rejecting a boy’s gestures of affection, to more deep-seated cultural issues such as dowry. While vengeance is a key reason, there are several other causes such as rejecting offers of love/marriage/sex, land/professional disputes, sadistic pleasure, alcohol/drug-related attacks, marital discord, dowry, and family disputes. To support acid attack victims, Meer foundation collaborates with institutions that provide medical aid, legal advice, counseling services, and vocational training.
