Puraiyur Welfare Trust is a Non-Governmental Organization focused on improving the lives of people in Puraiyur, a small village in Tamilnadu, by nouri Read moreshing social welfare, healthcare, and education, one step at a time. Puraiyur Welfare Trust (PWT) was founded by a group of young, social entrepreneurs with backgrounds in medicine, business, public health, computer science, and engineering. Since registering as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in 2017, PWT has focused primarily on the well-being of the students at Panchayat Union Middle School in Alwarthirunagari Union, Thoothukudi District, Tamilnadu. PWT has implemented numerous school reforms through various forms of crowdfunding, individual donations, and even its own funds. The major objectives of PWT are to increase the number of school-going children, facilitate them to develop other learning skills, experience smart classrooms, and celebrate education kits. And work as a catalyst to bring sustainable change in the lives of children with a life-cycle approach to development, education, and health. We take pride in being a fully apolitical organization with NO caste, creed, or gender bias.

Issue

The potential closure of Panchayat Union Middle School, a Government-established educational institution that has been active for nearly a century since 1931, loomed large due to insufficient student enrollments. Such an outcome would have had detrimental consequences on the education of the local children and those residing in the neighboring areas. In order to avert this unfortunate predicament, the dedicated school instructors and the community's spirited young individuals rallied together to safeguard the existence of this esteemed establishment.

Action

Founded in 2017, Puraiyur Welfare Trust(PWT)'s mission is to provide educational support to children in Puraiyur and its neighboring villages with the aim of empowering them. Several initiatives have been implemented, including the addition of a kindergarten section to the school, the appointment of un-aided teachers to bridge the gap in pupil-teacher ratio, the adoption of English medium classes, and the provision of educational kits to students on an annual basis. Moreover, PWT sponsors various school events such as the annual day and sports day, and also offers spoken English classes. In order to enhance the infrastructure, new classrooms have been constructed.
