Digambarpur Angikar is a registered non-profit, non-government organization based in Sundarban region established in the year 2000 with a vision to un Read moredertake relief, rehabilitation, and empowerment programs for the underprivileged and vulnerable sections of the society, through the provision of awareness building on different issues such as institutional care, right based campaigns, construction of low-cost sanitary facilities, skill development vocational training, disaster risk mitigation programme. Digambarpur Angikar also runs shelter homes for the destitute girl children in need of care and protection and another home for girls at risk. Our focus areas of work are child protection through institutional and non-institutional services, anti-human trafficking action, child education, livelihood development, water and sanitation, community health, and disaster management. Vision of the Organization: Our vision is of an egalitarian society where people, irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, can enjoy their basic human rights with equal access to resources for quality in life and livelihood. Mission of the Organization: To strengthen the empowerment process of the most vulnerable women and children, so that they can realize and protect their basic human rights.

Action

Building awareness and strengthening capacities of communities on entitlements of rights, running various types of shelter homes like; SAA Home, CNCP Home for Girls, CNCP Home for Boys, Cottage Home for Girls, CWSN home boys living with disabilities, Shakti Sadan Home for young women and Old aged Home for women. Total 400+ inmates are staying. Promoting sustainable livelihoods among marginalized ST & SC women in Sundarbans. Promoting Farmers Producers Organizations and building capacities on better value chain development towards increasing income of farmers. Running 03 schools for the children belongs to hardcore poor families with promotion of joyful learning. Conducting employable skills development for youths both girls and boys Prevention, care and treatment on HIV/AIDS among targeted communities like; FSM. MSM, Transgenders in various locations of North & South 24 Parganas district. Solid Waste Management in 24 numbers of urban municipalities in West Bengal.

Impact

i. Angikar Constructed 11500 IHHL & 217 ICDS toilet .Reach about 3500 villages & 217 ICDS centres on water and sanitation issues with focus on: BUMT: Built, Proper uses, Maintenance and treatment of Toilets. Behaviour changes among the beneficiary towards effective sanitation and sanitation value chain. ii. Constructed 64 toilets in schools with surface water connection. Identify 10 supportive schools and sensitize them on sanitation value chain, climate change issues and importance of rain water harvesting issues to resolve issues about existing worst water crisis. Reduce school absenteeism among targeted students [particularly among the girl students Increased retention of female teachers Infrastructural improvements such as purified water resources clean and well maintain toilets etc. iii. 400 plus most vulnerable girls, boys and old aged persons staying in shelter homes with proper care, education, skill development and regular health check-up including 60 numbers boys with disabilities. iv. 225 numbers of tiger widows have enhanced income and livelihoods through alternative income generation sources. v. 2500 most marginalized ST & SC women have increased climate resilient sustainable income and livelihoods in Sudurbans. vi. 533 numbers of girls and boys from the hardcore families continuing their free schooling with all kind of supports including nutrition and health. vii. 01 community with 250 households have access pipe line drinking water supplies and managed by them through collection of water tax by using water meters in each households. viii. More than 4,000 people have been supported on relief materials after cyclones and during Covid-19 pandemic periods. ix. The residents of 24 numbers of municipalities are continuing waste segregation at sources and scientific way of waste disposal. x. People in 225 villages in 07 blocks of south 24 parganas district have aware on child protection and child rights on controlling child marriage, trafficking, domestic violence and sexual abused.

Programs

  • Running CNCP Home for Boys

    50 numbers of vulnerable boys children ( age 6 to 18 years) those are the victims under Juvenile Justice Act are taking shelter including all supports with education and vocational training towards self-reliant after completion of 18 years of age.

  • Shelter Home for the Children with Special Needs (CWSN) for Boys,

    Total 60 numbers of boys ( age 6 to 18 years) living with disabilities are staying in this CWSN Home. This children are continuing their regular health check-up, counselling services, special education , games and recreation and complete care by the home management.

  • Running Shelter Homes for CNCP Girls & Cottage Home

    Total 200 numbers of most vulnerable girls ( age 6 to 18 years) those are the victims of trafficking, domestic violence, sexual abused, child marriage and other form of social evils are staying with proper care, nutrition, education, health,vocational training or activities, etc. with free of cost.

  • Healthy living for everyone with pure drinking water, Rain water harvesting, with focus on toilet construction & WSH Awareness

    • Major Activity: Constriction of school Toilet, Pipeline water supply and Rain water harvesting tools and ensures proper usages, Install improved water and sanitation facilities inside schools. Community awareness on Water and Sanitation including importance of harvesting rain water. Community sensitization with IEC campaign and community engagement .Formation and strengthen of ushers group to sustain the initiative.

  • Total Sanitation Programme (Mission Nirmal Bangla): Construction of IIHL followed by awareness on Stop OD, WSH and school sanitation.

    Activity: Toilet construction- IHHL at HHs and ICDS Centre. Insanitary to sanitary toilet and ensures proper toilet usages, Campaign against OD and proper maintenance of household generate SWMs. School Sanitation, Technical support to Govt on Toilet construction, maintenance and management. Formation and strengthen Ushers Group at community level to make ownership and local level monitoring system.

  • Construction of a Vocational Training Centre for Risk-Girls at Patharpratima Island of Sundarban Region, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal

    This building is continuing for organizing skill development training of 150 girls.

  • Let’s Talk on Plastic: Mass awareness among school going students to STOP & properly manage single use plastic under Swachhta Hi Sewa Campaign 2019

    1,000 families in two locations have been aware on no more plastic and scientific disposal of plastics and they all are practicing.

  • Construction of Shelter home for CNCP Girls

    This newly constructed building is using by 50 girls ( 6 to 18 years) as Child Needs in Care and Protection (CNCP) shelter Home.

  • School infrastructure support

    The Angikar Kisholay Niketan ( an upper primary school) is running where 278 children from hardcore poor families and children from shelter homes are attending regularly.

  • SAA ( Specialized Adoption Agency) Home

    Digambarpur Angikar is one of the Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA) approved by the government in the year 2021-22 for 10 babies to address the serious
    problems of abandoning and surrendering of new born babies by their biological mothers. Angikar is providing all sorts of care from nursing, nutritional foods, health care to shelter by trained nurses and governance's/ ayahs.

  • Shakti Sadan Home for destitute young Women

    The government aided residential Shakti Sadan shelter home for 50 numbers of most vulnerable and destitute young women ( 18 years to 60 years of age) with an aim to provide appropriate, safe and environment friendly shelter, proper care with basic needs and addressing mental, psychological and emotional needs of each and every inmates. Besides these all, Agkikar is providing skills development and support to continuing education to the eligible young women inmate for the self-sustainability.

  • Old aged Home for Women

    According to the law, a “senior citizen” means any person being a citizen of India, who has admitted the age of sixty years or above. A report released nu the UN Population Fund and Help Age India suggested that India has 90 million
    elderly people in 2011 and expected to grow 173 million by 2026. The one
    of the mission of Digambarpur Angikar is to ensure equitable treatment ensure equitable treatment to such sections of society which has suffered social inequalities, exploitation, discrimination and injustice. All the programs are meant to aid, prevent neglect, abuse and exploitation and provide assistance to those deprived and mainstream them.
    In view of this, Digambarpur Angikar has been working with 25 nos. of old aged women since 2019 with an integrated approach for their better life providing basic requirements along with shelter home and other services of regular health checkup, recreations like taking part in singing, exercise & meditation,
    sharing stories exposure, etc.

  • Amar Bari Urban Shelter Home for homeless people

    The urban shelter “Ashroy” has been set up at Sukantanagar, Salt Lake City under Ward No. 35 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation with the support of Kolkata
    Municipal Corporation (KMC) in the month of March 2023. Digambarpur
    Angikar is an operational partner of this home selected by the Govt of West
    Bengal. The main purpose of such home is to provide a roof or shelter to the people, people who have no shelter and no one to care for and they too have the right to live with comfortable in the city. A three storied building with all facilities provided by the KMC for the capacities to live eighty inmates both women and men. Till the end of the reporting period it has been achieved 76 inmates within the short time span.

  • Education Program by running creche and schools

    Since 2007, Angikar is running 04 creches under National Creche Scheme. Total 100 numbers of marginalized under 6 years of aged children of working mothers are getting proper care, nutrition supplementation, health check-up and preliminary education by joyful learning .

    Digambarpur Angikar is running 02 pre-primary education centre with 240 children since 2014 for the slum children, children are belongs to vulnerable families by providing basic education, serving cooked foods during school times as mid-day meals and regular health check-up by medical experts.

    A primary school (I to VI standards) called “Angikar Kishalay Niketan” is continuing since 2005 with 278 numbers children with 6 years to 14 years of aged living in rural communities. Total children 149 are continuing by the trained and qualified teachers. The school is continuing with value based education systems, ocurricular activities, sports, games and climate change adaptation, etc.

  • Climate change and adaptation of alternative livelihood among disaster prone Tribal and Scheduled Caste households at Sandeshkhali – I block in Sunda

    Digambarpur Angikar is implementing livelihood development project with 2,000 marginalized and disaster victim ST& SC women living 10 villages in 04 Gram Panchayats under Sandeshkhali –I Block of North 24 Parganas district. Project has successfully completed 1st year of interventions during the year and created some level of impacts among the project beneficiaries in their behavior and collective actions towards sustainable livelihoods. They have established linkages with various line departments like; agriculture, fishery, animal resource development, etc. By the end of the year, total 1114 ST & SC women have reached out through series of events and activities

  • Sustainable Livelihoods through Skill developments of Women SHG members in Sundarban

    Digambarpur Angikar is one of the partners of Tiger Widows Organization for strengthening existing women SHG forum to make them skillful and knowledge on preparation of business development plans, linkages with banks and other agencies and creation of women entrepreneurs. A number of total 600 women SHG members have been covered in Patharpratima, Kultali & Sandeshkhali – I block in Sundarban. A potable incubator for hatching of poultry has been established and poultry chicks distributed to 600 numbers of women members for rearing from this hatchery.

  • Empowering Tiger Widows of Sundarban for Sustainable & safe ecofriendly livelihood:

    Digambarpur Angikar in partnership with Melania, Netherlands for implementing livelihood development project with 40 most vulnerable poor tiger widow women in Sundarbans for mud crab cultivation. All women were provided mosquito net for preparation of bed, crab seed and crab feed as kick off support to start their crab cultivation. Continuous hand holding support is being cultivation. Provided all the trainees women to continue their production. All ten groups have sold their 1st term production at local fish market and earn on an average INR 10,000.00 to INR 12,000.00. All of them have again reinvested the amount in the business. Purchase more quantity of crab seed and continue Mud crab cultivation.

  • Sexual Health Targeted Intervention with FSWs:

    Digambarpur Angikar established in partnerships with WBSAP&CS and NACO, since 2010 in implementation of Targeted Intervention (TI) Project with active population of 349 FSWs at Canning, Ghutiary Sharif and Baruipur under South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Project is continuing with providing services related to Early Detection, full treatment of STIs, Blood Testing to understand the HIV status, motivating towards use of condoms correctly, Pre & Post-test counseling, adaptation of safer sexual practices and conducting regular clinics.

  • HIV & STI Prevention as Targeted Intervention on Transgender Community & MSM:

    Digambarpur Angikar continues sexual health intervention as Targeted Intervention (TI) project with 462 numbers of transgender & MSM communities in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal state with the partnering of WBSAP&CS. The main activities have been undertaken of social mapping, regular contact and follow-up, early detection of STIs, blood testing to know own HIV status, correct use of lubricants, pre & post-test counseling and behavior change towards safer sexual practices.

  • Solid Waste Management in Municipal Towns:

    Digambarpur Angikar is one of the empanelled organizations of SIDA, Department of Urban Development & Municipal Affairs, Govt. of West Bengal for the promotion of segregation of wastes at sources, monitoring of proper disposal of wastes, recycling of biodegradable waste and preparation of Micro Plan for each municipalities. SUDA has given Angikar to work in 24 Municipalities in West Bengal since 2021. During the reporting year, Angikar submitted 24 numbers of micro plans to the respective municipalities. Total 5 million of people reached in IEC campaigns, awareness on waste segregation at source, and scientific solid waste management processes.

  • Waiting hut for pregnant mothers:

    Digambarpur Angikar runs waiting hut in Gosaba Island where transportation is the major concern for the pregnant mothers to attend hospital. This waiting hut is for pregnant mothers those are living in much remote villages to reach hospital takes 3 to 4 hours after crossing multiple rivers by passenger boats and motorized van. The pregnant mothers are taking shelter for 2 to 5 days while coming to hospital for check-up and delivery purposes. During the reporting year a total numbers of 436 mothers availed facilities from this waiting hut.

  • Sustainable Community Managed Pipeline Household Drinking Water Supply:

    Digambarpur a remote village is situated in Patharpratima Block under South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. A water supply project was implemented in the year 2015 with the support of Water for People with 720 families. All families have been connected with pipeline water supply systems. There is a water user committee (WUC) and they have been capacitated on overall operations and maintenance of the project. After few years, it has been found all families paying monthly water tariff regularly, project is well maintained and all the beneficiary families are follows the rules and regulations of WUC. This is an example of sustainable community managed drinking water program

  • Access to Justice on protection of Child Rights

    The project is running in 07 blocks with covering 225 villages in South 24 Parganas district with the collaboration of KSCF. The main activities of the project is to create awareness on child rights and various laws on child protection from child marriage, domestic violence, trafficking, sexual abused, child labour, etc. Angikar is also closely working with local administration, police and CWC/DCPO and supporting government authorities on rescue and recovery operations.
