SEWA, an acronym signifying "service to society," originates from the altruistic endeavours of a group of conscientious youths driven by a shared sens Read moree of social responsibility. It officially gained non-profit organisation status on November 26, 2014. It aspires to foster a vibrant, peaceful, and progressive society, wherein each individual leads a dignified life, sharing nearly equal socio-economic status. This entails empowering one another to facilitate enhanced prosperity and harmony, thereby contributing to the betterment of our planet each day. It revolves around catalyzing inclusive and sustainable development for society's vulnerable segments, harnessing every feasible capability within reach to elevate their standard of living. SEWA serves as a beacon of hope, particularly for unemployed youth and women, by emphasizing livelihood opportunities. Its movement embodies aspects of the labour movement, cooperative movement, and self-empowerment movement, collectively uniting to seek full employment, characterized by work, income, food, and social security. These workers stand resolute in organising to overcome societal and economic constraints and pursue their quest for self-reliance, incorporating both struggle and development as essential strategies guided by Gandhian principles.

Programs

  • Grama Ujjala Programme

    District
    State

The COVID-19 pandemic's profound impact emphasizes the urgency of environmental preservation and carbon footprint reduction. The SHINE programme, successfully initiated by SEWA in Assam last year, stands as a testament to this commitment. Over 121,000 Assam households received energy-efficient LED bulbs, replacing ICL bulbs, contributing to both environmental and rural household well-being. Now, this noble effort extends to Bihar as Team SEWA collaborates with the Gram Ujjala Program, a Ministry of Power initiative in association with CESL and C-Quest Capital, aiming to reach a minimum of 160,000 rural households by providing affordable LED bulbs at just Rs 10 in exchange for ICLs.

  • Research and Development Programmes

    District
    State

This initiative was exclusively executed by the dedicated SEWA Environment and Forest Management Team under the active guidance of the organisation's executive members. In addition to this effort, our bamboo forest management programme oversees forested areas predominantly populated with wild bamboo, encompassing around 4800 bighas of land within the Abhaiyapur forest range of the Sonari Forest division in Assam. Notably, this plantation programme involves more than 500 farmers across the target districts, contributing to afforestation efforts that span 1000 bighas of land.

  • Shine Programme - Distribution of Bulbs

Part of the Environment Protection programme and based on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), this initiative aims to mitigate carbon emissions. SEWA collaborates with C-Quest Capital LLC, USA, implementing the Subsidized LED bulb distribution programme, SHINE, which involves exchanging Incandescent Lamps (ICL) bulbs for energy-efficient LED bulbs in various districts of Assam, including Jorhat, Majuli, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Sonitpur, and Nagaon. This effort serves to reduce fossil-fuel-based electricity consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy efficiency in residential and commercial lighting across India.

  • Energy Efficiency Programme - Dinabandhu Cookstove

    State

This initiative aimed at enhancing household energy efficiency and environmental protection through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). In collaboration with C-Quest Capital LLC, USA, the programme strives to empower women by liberating them from the burdensome task of collecting firewood and using inefficient traditional cookstoves, which emit smoke and threaten their health. The broader project addresses indoor air pollution and deforestation by introducing efficient cookstoves designed to reduce fuel consumption and minimize smoke production, thus improving indoor air quality and conserving wood resources in homes across India.

  • Skill Development Programme of Assam Skill Development Mission (ASDM)

    State

This programme, undertaken as part of its skill development initiative, engaged over 2,000 small tea growers and 1,000 bamboo farmers. Collaboratively initiated by SEWA and VALUER FABTEX, in association with ASDM, it falls under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme as a result of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY). RPL encourages individuals with existing skills to join the mainstream workforce and advance their careers, involving specific Qualification Packs (QP) related to distinct job roles. This Skill Certification Scheme aims to provide Indian youth with industry-relevant training for better livelihood opportunities.

  • Life Training Programme on Personality Management

    State

This programme, integral to SEWA's pursuit of enhancing sustainability, has significantly benefited women in rural and underprivileged regions from its inception. Field studies have unequivocally demonstrated that women possess the potential for financial excellence akin to men. However, due to a lack of access to proper knowledge, training, and guidance, their capabilities often go untapped and underappreciated. Collaborating with Gram Tarang, the programme was initiated to empower these women and young girls by providing insights into various aspects of personality management.
