The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences(KISS) works to provide children from tribal communities with a full-residential education programme. The inst Read moreitution has been created to provide equal opportunity and access to children to enable them to break the cycle of poverty. Students from grades 6 to 10 are also trained in a vocational trade based on their interests. The proceeds from the sale of the products made by the children go back to the students concerned. This helps the students to earn while learning. UN ECOSOC has given Grants Special Consultative Status to KISS. It has also worked in partnership with the United Nation Development Program(UNDP). In 2017, it became the world's first university for tribal communities. It was also awarded "NGO of the year" by UBS Forum at CSR Summit in 2019.

Vision & Mission

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) was founded by the Eminent Educationist Achyuta Samanta in 1993 with only 125 tribal students. It has grown in all dimensions to become the world’s largest residential institution for 25,308 students of tribal origin (covering 62 tribes including 13 primitive tribes). It provides education (from Standard I to Post Graduation), accommodation, food, health care, study material, clothing, vocational training (farm and non-farm sector), games and sports, computer education, state-of-the-art pedagogy and facilities totally free of cost. KISS has been recognized by the United Nations and has been accorded Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council and is amongst the top 500 NGO's of the world recognized by NGO Advisor. Teachers are asked to motivate the tribal children in to study with special care as most of the students are first generation learners. Apart from class room teaching we also engage the students in various sports and other competitions. We organize festivals to entertain the student. Students are also taken out of campus to different places of visit. Classes are taken by experienced teachers and review examinations are done periodically. Students are encouraged to participate in all the classroom activities. Reward and prizes are also given to encourage the children on their pursuit of excellence in different fields.
All the necessities of the students like food, medical care and other day to day requirements are taken care of with utmost care
To build up KISS as a preferred center of learning for the poorest of the poor sections of the society with a focus on formal and livelihood education and scope for all-round development.

KISS runs Skill Development Centres from its premises for this purpose and training is imparted along with education enabling each student to earn while they learn through the sale of the products they manufacture while training.

  • Volunteering & Internship Programme

    State

The institution runs a volunteering and internship programme for young and like-minded students. Its aim is to enable, empower and enlighten the students to appreciate the inter-cultural fabric of Odisha.

It encourages the intermingling of thoughts and the exchange of diverse opinions among the interns leading to a rich and diverse knowledge base. They are also freely allowed to mingle with KISS students, staff and faculty to enhance experience.

  • Free Residental Education

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) is in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. Its aim is to liberate underprivileged tribal children to come out of the bondage of ignorance and illiteracy. The illiteracy problem is further compounded by the high dropout rate in higher education which results in child labor, child marriages, and ill-health. KISS has reached out to 20,000 children from 62 tribes of Odisha. The main objective is to develop into a center of learning for the poorest of the poor sections of the society with a focus on formal and livelihood education and scope for all-round development. KISS is the largest residential institute for the tribal in the world, providing free accommodation, food, healthcare, education vocational training and a job after completion of education. The facility at KISS attracts the students to pursue study at KISS. The quality of education and food are the main attractions for the students. Breakfast is provided early on the morning. Looking at the interest of the students different items are served to students on different days. To active the aforesaid goals KISS has establish a school at Bhubaneswar with a capacity of 29,000 children studying from class -1 to Post Graduation and 4 more campuses at Balasore, Baripada, Bhawanipatna and Balangiri with capacity of 1,000 each for impacting free residential education from class-1 to 10 ( matriculation

  • Multilingual Education

    State

The KISS school has students coming from some of the most marginalised and vulnerable communities. Most of them are first-generation learners. Under such circumstances, it is vital that they are taught in a familiar language – i.e., their mother tongue so that they understand and relate to what is being taught to them. This arrest drop-out from school and encourages students to express themselves, connect with other students and teachers, and absorb the learnings. The on-going Mother Tongue Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) programme at KISS and what it has achieved over the last three decades challenges cultural colonialism. By providing quality education to more than 60,000 tribal children free of cost it has empowered them and ushered tribal transformation.

  • Life Skill Education

Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) is undertaking life skills based sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education program from 2009. In KISS, around 30,000 tribal students are pursuing their education out of which around 13,000 are tribal adolescents. A comprehensive Life Skills based Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH) Education Program is being implemented at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) with an aim for empowering adolescents with correct and age appropriate information on their safer and informed growing up process as well as initiating measures for institutionalizing the intervention for its long term sustainability within the institute. The intervention has been implemented to enhance the knowledge and skills of the students on life skills and SRH through class room transaction at school level and peer education at college level.
