The organisation offers consumers a way to improve the lives of farmers. Fairtrade offers wholesale products for cocoa, coffee, herbs, sugar, rice, spices, tea, cotton and edible oil. It also provides eco-friendly clothing, basmati rice and organic tea in retail. Fairtrade India helps farmers by providing them with stable minimum prices and a premium over and above the minimum price. Farmers can choose democratically how to use that premium. This premium has been used to create computer centres in some villages. The premium has also been used by farmers to fund solidarity loans for the most disadvantaged producers while some have used it for providing life insurance policies for workers. It also tries to protect the environment by encouraging farmers to adopt eco-friendly practices and discouraging the use of chemicals which are prohibited. The organisation has helped 1,21,400 farmers and workers in India and has generated a premium of Rs.19.40 crores in 2011-12.
