Founded in 1952 by 36 women, the Delhi Commonwealth Women's Association (DCWA) aims to unite Indian and Commonwealth women through social and cultural Read more activities. Growing over time, it has become a well-respected charity in Delhi, counting over 300 women as members. Supported by 154 international Heads of Missions' spouses, DCWA benefits from dedicated volunteers working to improve the lives of the less fortunate, making it a prominent charitable force in Delhi.

Programs

  • Medical Centre Programme

    DCWA's Medical Centre began modestly but has grown significantly, transitioning from a chaupal to a well-equipped facility in Zamrudpur in 1986. Treating over 70,000 patients annually, it hosts renowned doctors across various specialities. Alongside regular health camps, it extends its reach to Delhi and Gurgaon's slums. The centre provides free medications, affordable comprehensive care, and mobile health services. Moreover, it educates communities through talks and camps, fostering health awareness among them.

  • Learning Centre Programme

    Established in 1979, DCWA created a Learning Centre for the underprivileged and differently-abled, offering diverse educational pathways like early learning and special needs education. The Primary Learning Centre readies preschoolers for mainstream schooling, providing classrooms, play areas, uniforms, books, and meals for over 120 children. DCWA awards scholarships to 200+ students yearly, supporting their aspirations. Tutorials aid students from 1st generation learner households in Classes II to X, led by qualified teachers. The Centre also hosts specialized sessions, including speech therapy, autism, occupational therapy, and ADHD, fostering learning and confidence in both children and parents.

    Skill Development forms a crucial facet of DCWA's initiatives, empowering individuals from less privileged backgrounds to attain self-sufficiency. Offering comprehensive programmes at nominal fees, DCWA equips both young and older adults with job-ready skills or entrepreneurial prowess. The organisation fosters partnerships with entities providing free or subsidized vocational training, creating opportunities for community youth. Volunteers actively mentor these students, guiding their learning paths and career choices. At the skill development centre, diverse courses are offered: the Hospital Attendant Training Programme certifies students in patient care, the Basic Tailoring Course hones tailoring skills, the Beauty Training Course covers beauty care and hair styling, while the Computer Skills Course imparts foundational and advanced computer skills, laying a robust professional groundwork for young adults.

  • Community Service Programme

    DCWA's Community Service Programme extends aid to various sections of society through counselling, emotional support, and financial assistance. Notable instances include the Subedar Family, where all members faced an incurable illness, and DCWA facilitated a small store for them, supplemented by monthly aid and connections to further support groups. The organisation also aids Asha Sadan, a home for children of prison inmates, along with Assisi School, offering necessary materials. Additionally, DCWA supports St. Michael's Orphanage and School in Bhogal, New Delhi, providing monthly donations to empower young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, and offering them shelter and education for a brighter future.
