Founders Adrienne Monteath-Van Dok and Hayley Bolding set up Atma in 2007, after exploring first-hand the dearth of quality education services that le Read moreft millions of children excluded from a relevant education. Atma's mission became plain: support existing education NGOs, transforming them into sustainable and scalable organisations. By transforming high potentials into high impact organisations, Atma enables them to reach out to more children in need. Atma is an Accelerator for Education NGOs and Social Enterprises in India. We currently operate pan India. Faced by a lack of resources and expertise, high-potential education organisations are often unable to maximise their impact. We help NGOs become bigger, better and stronger by helping them solve their operational challenges and plan for their future growth. Atma Vision: To ensure quality education for all children. Atma Mission: To build the capacity of education NGOs to achieve sustainability and scalability thereby enabling delivery of quality education.


Issue

Social problems in India are diverse and complex. They are deeply interconnected and have a direct impact on the well-being of individuals and the development of the country as a whole. Addressing these issues requires multi-faceted approaches that address the root causes of these problems and the needs of communities. NGOs can play a key role in solving such complex challenges in our country by building solutions that emerge from a deep understanding of the need on the ground. However, faced with a severe lack of resources and presence of challenges, they are unable to realise their true potential. Some of the challenges faced by NGOs are: 1) Regulatory 2) Financial 3) People-centric 4) Programmatic, and 5) Technological Lack of capacity for NGOs leads to: -Reduced effectiveness to carry out the programmes effectively. -Limited reach, hindering the impact in their communities. -Difficulty in fundraising -High staff turnover


Action

Atma develops and strengthens the skills, knowledge, systems and processes of organisations to enhance their effectiveness and bring about positive change. Our ultimate goal of capacity building is to empower individuals and organisations to become more self-sufficient, resilient, and impactful. Atma interventions are housed under two kinds of programmes - Atma Accelerator and Atma Lab Accelerator - Depending on the needs of the organisation, our intervention is either intensive or short term. Intensive intervention includes our flagship 3-year Atma Accelerator Programme or 1-year Atma Accelerator Programme. Short term intervention includes project partnerships or workshops. Lab - The Atma Lab pioneers innovative projects that fill an important gap in the sector. The Atma Lab enables Atma to build the capacity of NGOs in several formats on an ecosystem level. We have impacted 800+ NGOs through several Lab projects. The primary stakeholders for Atma are NGOs working towards social problems and development challenges. All the end stakeholders of the partner organisations under the Accelerator Programme, which belong to the marginalised communities, are secondary stakeholders for Atma.

Key achievements: 1. Since 2007, Atma has partnered with 92 organisations under the Atma Accelerator Programme. Additionally, Atma has impacted 800+ NGOs through several Lab projects. 2. In 2021-22, - Atma impacted 1001 NGOs through capacity-building support. - We partnered with 28 intermediary organisations - Atma conducted 11 webinars and published 2 articles for thought leadership - As part of our flagship Accelerator programme, Atma worked intensively with 24 NGOs and completed ~150 projects. - Expanding support to organisations pan India, Atma worked intensively across 6 states - Atma mobilised 28 volunteers from 6 countries who contributed to 68 projects. 3. Impact of Atma’s Accelerator: External study conducted by Sattva 3.1. After 3 years of the Accelerator programme, on average, an Atma partner NGO grew by: - 2.2x average increase in funding - 2.1x average increase in staff size - 4x average increase in end stakeholders 3.2. 77% organisations reported improvement in skills 3.3. 75% organisations reported improvement in processes 3.4. Programs

  • The Atma Lab

    Atma pioneers innovative projects in addition to the Accelerator, filling vital gaps in the sector. These projects are now housed under The Atma Lab, comprising five distinct initiatives with clear outcomes, collaboratively designed with external stakeholders.

  • Future of Impact

    During the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, Atma organized the Future of Impact Collaborative in partnership with other sector intermediaries. The Collab aimed to facilitate information sharing and equip NGOs with resources for a swift response to the unfolding crisis. Bringing together social sector intermediaries from various domains, the FOI Collaborative ensured that NGOs nationwide had access to a robust support network.

  • Gati

    Gati's inclusion in education encompasses providing every child, especially those with disabilities, with the necessary support to achieve academic and socio-emotional success. This is achieved through fostering an inclusive school culture, policies, and practices.

  • Atma Accelerator

    We offer hands-on support for planning, strategizing, and implementing projects across development areas. The purpose is to strengthen the capacity with streamlined management processes and effective tools. Atma offers intensive and short term tracks of support. As an intensive The 3 - Years Partnership as part of intensive support enables organisations to patiently and systematically build capacity. The short term track of 1 - Year Partnership enables organisations to get focused sustained support in key problem areas.
