Divya Jyoti Trust is a newly established registered charitable trust with a focus on serving poor communities in interior rural tribal areas. Drawing Read moreinspiration from Gandhiji's ideals, the philanthropic individuals behind the trust have dedicated themselves to the service of humanity. Collaborating with like-minded individuals, the Trust aims to engage in various activities to support the underprivileged community, utilizing available resources and manpower. As the trust's current expertise lies in the field of Ophthalmology, its initial focus is on eye care. To begin its humanitarian efforts, the Trust plans to set up an eye hospital to address the eye care needs of the communities it serves.

Programs

  • Tejas Eye Hospital

    The Tejas Eye Hospital, inaugurated on 22nd May 2011, provides comprehensive eye care services with various facilities like a 100-bed indoor unit, well-equipped operation theatres, speciality clinics, diagnostic eye camps, and transportation services. In the past 11 years, It has performed over 100,000 surgeries, and 75% of indoor patients, especially Scheduled tribes with BPL cards, receive free treatment. The hospital offers subsidized medicines and spectacles, serving a total population of approximately 2.5 million, and expects to conduct over 13,000 surgeries in the coming years. It focuses on providing quality eye care, especially to tribal communities in underserved areas, through specialized clinics and full-time ophthalmologists in various sub-specialities.

  • Vocational Training Programme

    Its Vocational Training programme of the organisation includes training at the Netrajyoti Training Centre and Diwali Ba Optometry College. The Netrajyoti Training Centre offers long-term fellowships in cornea, retina, glaucoma, and pediatric ophthalmology, as well as comprehensive fellowships, lasting one and a half years each. Additionally, short-term fellowships are available, such as two months of SICS fellowship, one-month Phacoemulsification fellowship, two months of medical retina fellowship, and one month of glaucoma observership. On the other hand, Diwali Ba Optometry College provides a four-year Bachelor's Degree Programme in Optometry.

  • Research Programme

    The organisation engages in various research activities, including epidemiological studies and clinical trials. It has completed projects like the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness in tribal areas of Surat District, which won an award at the Gujarat State Conference. Analysis for three ongoing studies, including a comprehensive door-to-door survey of blindness, socio-economic status, and diabetes screening, will be published soon. Another study on Rapid Assessment of Visual Impairment in Surat district is completed, supported by "Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust" Mumbai. The hospital also participated in a multicentre study on diabetic retinopathy conducted by the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH), London, and the Indian Institute of Public Health- Public Health Foundation of India (IIPH-PHFI), Hyderabad. They plan to conduct more clinical and epidemiological studies, with a recent start on a prospective study of SICS outcomes.

  • Outreach Activities

    The organisation conducts outreach activities that include diagnostic eye camps thrice a week within a 125 km radius, covering a population of 2.5 million people. Additionally, they operate at Netrang and Jhankhvav Community Health Centres (CHCs) under a public-private partnership with the Government of Gujarat. The organisation also manages the C.V. Shah eye hospital in Vyara and operates eight vision centres in various locations. It runs a Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Programme for incurably blind individuals, having rehabilitated 450 such people in Mandvi, Umarpada, Mangrol, and Vyara talukas. Furthermore, it provides an integrated education programme for blind children in these talukas, facilitated by a braille teacher, and has established Vivekananda Pragnyachakshu Bhavan, a hostel for blind children.

  • Diagnostic Eye Camps Programme

    The organisation conducts diagnostic eye camps twice a week to provide eye care services to poor tribal communities near their doorsteps. The preparation starts a month in advance, with a pilot visit to the village for confirming the date and campsite and raising local support. On the camp day, a team comprising an ophthalmologist, paramedical workers, optician, and health educator arrives at 9 am. Refraction and low-cost glasses are provided at the campsite, and patients requiring surgery are screened for various conditions. Those needing surgery are brought to the base hospital on the same day and operated safely the next day. These camps cover approximately 25 lakh people in the Surat district and adjacent rural-tribal areas, with local or external support helping with the funds needed for the camps and surgical work.
